The Secondary Progressed Lunation Cycle -Dane Rudhyar (1895–1985)

Dane Rudhyar (1895–1985) was a leading figure in modern astrology who completely reshaped the way we perceive it today. He is considered the "father" of Humanistic Astrology, as he successfully combined traditional astrology with Carl Jung's analytical psychology and Eastern philosophy.

Instead of viewing the stars as indicators of a predetermined "fate" or as omens of good and bad luck, Rudhyar argued that the natal chart is a blueprint of the human psyche and a guide for personal growth.
The Secondary Progressed Lunation Cycle
This theory is one of his most important and practical contributions to astrological forecasting. The cycle is based on the evolving relationship between the Progressed Sun and the Progressed Moon (using the "one day after birth equals one year of life" system).
The complete cycle lasts approximately 29–30 years and reflects how our consciousness evolves and how we experience major life transformations. It is divided into 8 basic phases, with the most critical being:
  • Progressed New Moon (Beginning of the Cycle): A period of deep, often unconscious seeding. New interests, desires, or a completely new life direction begin here, even though the results are not yet visible.
  • Progressed First Quarter (Approx. 7–8 years later): A phase of action and crisis. The individual is called to make decisions and overcome obstacles to support the new direction that began at the New Moon.
  • Progressed Full Moon (Approx. 15 years later): The culmination of the cycle. Things come to light. It is a time of peak awareness, success, or a clear understanding of what works and what does not in our lives.
  • Progressed Last Quarter (Approx. 22 years later): A phase of re-evaluation and "harvesting." The individual begins to integrate the wisdom gained and let go of what is no longer needed, slowly preparing for the next cycle. An Astrological Example

    An Astrological Example
The cycle began with a Progressed New Moon at 7 degrees of Libra, inside the individual's 2nd house. The most defining factor here is that this New Moon occurred in a tight conjunction with the individual's natal Uranus.
    • The Seeding & The Uranian Element: A completely new, disruptive seed was planted here. The individual was led into new partnerships and relationships (Libra), which carried a strong Uranian signature—unconventional, freeing, or involving people who bring a revolution or a change of direction in one's life. The conjunction with Uranus shows that the person dynamically entered groups with a shared purpose and goal (11th house) that involved elements of astrology, technology, or innovation (Uranus).
    • House Rulership (11th & 12th Houses): In this chart, the Moon rules the 11th house of the natal wheel (collectives, friends, grand visions, life direction) as well as the 12th solar house (spirituality, the unconscious, inner work, isolation). This means that the new financial beginning and the grounding of self-realization (the 2nd house from the 1st) came through engaging with esoteric, metaphysical, or humanitarian sciences (12th), such as astrology (Uranus), within a group setting (11th).
    • An Inner Healing: This new beginning may have also operated simultaneously as a deep, internal, psychological therapy (12th solar house). The seeding took place "behind the scenes," away from the public eye, allowing the person to heal old patterns and quietly prepare the next phase of life through inner wisdom.
    • In the solar chart, the Progressed New Moon falls into the solar 3rd house—the house of communication, spoken and written word, knowledge, and learning. This signifies the beginning of a brand-new cycle centered around communication, networking, writing, and short trips
Progressed Moon in Sagittarius (Waxing Sextile Phase)
Today, the cycle has advanced, and the Progressed Moon is in Sagittarius, forming a waxing sextile to the Progressed Sun. The individual is currently in the most creative and productive phase of the cycle!
    • Natal 4th House: The Moon moves through the 4th house, shifting the focus to family, home, and one's foundations. However, since this is the 4th/10th house axis, it can also impact the career (10th). The energy of Sagittarius indicates that this period is strongly connected to education, seminars, or dealing with foreign matters and higher knowledge (Sagittarius)—activities that are now hosted or organized from within the home (e.g., e-learning, webinars, studying in one's personal space).
    • Solar 5th House: If we look at the chart from a solar perspective (placing the Progressed Sun as the Ascendant of the cycle), the Moon is in the 5th house. This means the individual is at their peak: there is an intense need for creativity, joy, self-expression, and hobbies that turn into passions. The astrology (Uranus) and teamwork (11th) that started as a seed are now expressed with absolute creative freedom (Sagittarius), bringing deep satisfaction.
The First Quarter in Capricorn (Waxing Square)
This creative preparation and expansion happening now in Sagittarius is the necessary fuel for the next step. When the Progressed Moon enters the next sign, Capricorn, the cycle will reach the First Quarter phase (waxing square).
Though the Moon is in the sign of its detriment, it becomes a tireless Moon—serious and filled with a sense of duty—that will take strong, decisive action (Mars exaltation). This is where the "crisis in action" (creative square) will arrive. The individual will see the first tangible and practical results of the Uranian seeds (New Moon) they planted.
They will be called to bring structure, accept responsibilities, and make crucial decisions on how to ground and advance this knowledge long-term and professionally (Capricorn - 6th House).
Conclusion: The Map of Our Inner Transits
The Secondary Progressed Lunation Cycle, according to Dane Rudhyar, is not a tool of fatalism, but rather the map of our inner progressions and transits. It shows us with absolute precision the phases of our soul:
    • When the Progressed New Moon calls us to plant our seeds in the dark.
    • When the First Quarter Moon (Waxing Square) demands dynamic action and breakthroughs.
    • When the Progressed Full Moon brings culmination and full awareness.
    • When the Last Quarter Moon (Waning Square) asks us to release what is outdated and integrate our wisdom.
Instead of resisting change, understanding these astrological phases helps us synchronize with the cosmic clock. Every zodiac sign, house, and aspect activated by the Progressed Moon serves its own deeper purpose in the evolution of our natal chart.
Please note that the individual has already experienced all of this: education, learning, communication, written and spoken word (3rd house), contact with foreign countries and people from abroad (Sagittarius), higher education, and an expansive Jupiterian action in communication and networking (3rd house).
There was also a lot of work from home (4th house) and intense activity through social media and broadcasting (3rd house). Don't forget that the Progressed Moon in Sagittarius has also activated natal Jupiter (higher knowledge, education, teaching).
