Part 1: Anaretic (Final) Degrees in the Natal Chart and Their Significance

Anaretic Degrees and Their Significance in the Natal Chart

The information presented here is based on the excellent book by Christos Paizis, “The Anaretic Degrees of the Zodiac and Their Function” (1st edition 2018, Lexitypon Publications)—a work that truly deserves a place in everyone's library.

Although we hear a great deal about anaretic degrees, we actually know very little about what they precisely mean and how they are utilized, particularly in Natal Astrology. The word "anaretic" (αναιρετική) originates from the Greek verb anairo (αναιρώ), which means to cancel, destroy, or terminate.
While anaretic degrees hold a highly specific position and interpretation in Horary Astrology, they play an equally vital role in both Natal and Karmic Astrology. The latter examines the dynamics of the horoscope through the prism of karma and past experience—namely, past incarnations (for those who accept the metaphysical theory of reincarnation)—or as the experience of our ancestors passed down to us cellularly through heredity.
Anaretic degrees are the final degrees of a sign (from the 28th to the 30th), but most notably the 29th degree. They have been designated as such for the following reasons:
  • They are always located in the bounds of Mars and Saturn: These planets are traditionally associated with death—the termination of life—which is why these degrees are considered particularly challenging.
  • They function as a point of transition: Their mandate or requirement is to dissolve the themes of the current sign and transition into the next. This is where their name ("anaretic") stems from, helping us understand their functionality within a natal chart.
For example, in the case of planets at the 29th degree of Scorpio, the themes of this sign must be transmuted and transmitted into the following sign, Sagittarius, based on the qualities of this new sign.
This means that the individual must transfer their deep investigative gaze, passion, profound Plutonian experience of catharsis, and entrepreneurial skills into a new state of being, such as higher education, teaching, and spiritual dimensions. They must expand these traits into higher and theoretical knowledge rather than keeping them exclusively to themselves. Even their entrepreneurial and financial skills (Scorpio) can be transmitted and broadened (Sagittarius).
In this manner, they signify the completion of a cycle regarding the themes of the sign, the house they occupy, or even the house ruled by the planet in question. For this reason, they play a major role in Karmic Astrology, as well as in Vedic Astrology, where planets found at these degrees are considered Atmakaraka (indicators of the soul), thus representing the very quality of the soul.
Consequently, these degrees largely trace the accumulated experience derived either from past incarnations or from ancestry. In fact, for those who do not accept the concept of past lives, this point clearly reflects the genetic inheritance that each individual carries.
They indicate a tendency for obsession regarding the themes of the house and the sign, but primarily, in the initial phase, the sign itself. They reveal difficulties, as the experiences and all the knowledge acquired through the themes of the current sign must now pass, develop, or be transmitted through the next sign.
This, however, is not easy—especially when there are no planets in the following sign to help the individual make this transition. In the Scorpio example, this placement can cause intense problems within the themes of the sign, such as sexual issues, financial ruin, obsessions, and vices.
All of these must pass through and be transmuted into the values of the next sign, Sagittarius. Thus, blind passion (Scorpio) is transformed into a passion for knowledge, religion, intellect, travel (or knowledge gained through it), teaching, transmission, and justice (Sagittarius).
They indicate talents related to the sign, representing an excellent command of its themes, making it seem as though the individual was born with an innate ability. For instance, a planet at the anaretic degree of Scorpio grants an innate capacity for entrepreneurship; in Sagittarius, it gives a talent for teaching; in Aries, it offers the gift of a leader—the ability to spearhead a group and guide it, and so on.
Multiple anaretic degrees in a horoscope are an indication of a cycle closing and a new one beginning.
Anaretic degrees are always located in the Dodekatemorion (twelfth-part) of the previous sign. (A Dodekatemorion is the division of a sign into 12 parts, where each part spans 2.5 degrees and corresponds to a specific sign, according to the ancient theory of the 12 parts—meaning that the entire zodiac is contained within a single sign).
How the Dodekatemorion functions: It shows the sector in which the dynamics of the anaretic degree will express themselves. The more we insist on operating on the negative side of the sign or house in which it is located, the more this negative energy will be channeled and manifested through the sign of the Dodekatemorion.
Example: A planet at the anaretic degree of Scorpio has its Dodekatemorion in Libra. This means that the more we insist on manifesting the negative qualities of Scorpio—such as jealousy, possessiveness, absolute control, and the manipulation of others—the more this negative energy will be mirrored in Libra, causing problems in relationships and partnerships, separations, or even legal entanglements.
Finally, regarding past experiences, they indicate past abuses, excesses, and negligence.
In our next article, we will analyze the anaretic degree and its mode of operation separately for each sign, as well as the Dodekatemorion to which it belongs.
